Top-Ranked Player Kasatkina Reveals Career Break Due to ‘Psychological Pressure’

The nation's leading female tennis athlete has decided to take a break for the remainder of the 2025 season, stating she is at her “psychological and emotional threshold.”

Factors Leading to the Choice

The Australian No. 1, who recently changed her allegiance to compete for Australia, blamed the change for contributing to significant “mental and emotional strain.”

Additional factors included the continued challenge of being away from her loved ones and the grueling tour schedule.

“I haven't been okay for a long time and, truth be told, my match outcomes and showings reflect that,” she posted on her online accounts.

She continued, “Truth is, I've reached my limit and can't continue. I need a break. A break from the repetitive routine of life on the tour, the constant packing, the results, the expectations, the same faces (apologies, ladies), all aspects of this career.”

Individual Challenges and Return Plans

“I can only handle I can endure and handle as a female athlete, all whilst facing off against the best female athletes in the world.”

“If this makes me weak, then that's acceptable, I'm weak. That said, I am confident in my resilience and will grow by being away, recharging, reorganizing and revitalizing. It's time I paid attention to my instincts for a difference, my thoughts, my emotions and my physical self.”

The athlete chose to switch allegiance after leaving her nation due to fears for her security, having previously criticized the government's policies affecting the queer community and the invasion of Ukraine. After initially residing in the UAE, she moved to Australia and obtained permanent residency in early this year.

She subsequently became engaged to longtime girlfriend a former Olympic figure skater, who secured a Olympic silver for her birth country at the last Winter Olympics after first representing for her birth nation Estonia.

The tennis star also revealed she has been unable to visit her dad, who remains in Russia, for an extended period.

Tennis Journey

A major tournament contender in recent years, Kasatkina had concluded the last four calendar years in the elite group but is presently 19th after a modest season where she secured 19 victories against 21 defeats.

She is projected to drop out of the top 20 by the time the home major arrives.

The professional athlete announced she aims to resume in the following season, “recharged and motivated,” with the lead-in to her home grand slam probably acting as a return target.

Broader Implications

The nation's current No. 2 is another Australian athlete, ranked 35th globally.

She is the third top WTA competitor to end their season early, following two other stars, amid a recent trend of athletes withdrawing during competitions.

The tour governing body obligates elite athletes to appear at a set number of tournaments, including the major tournaments, top-tier competitions, and six 500-level tournaments.

But top-ranked player a leading athlete commented recently, “It's not feasible to squeeze it in the schedule. It's possible I will have to pick some events and omit them, although they are required.

“It's essential to plan wisely about it - possibly disregarding about the regulations and just think what's good for us.”
