The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results announced on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a response, the student claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The society had previously condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
