Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
