Delhi Rises to Hazardous Smog Post Celebrations

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Alarming Pollution Measurements

Various sections of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals ten times the recommended level recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city leadership appealed to the highest court to request a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Court Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city registered contamination spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k early mortalities annually in Delhi.
