RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
